Features – Workflow
JIRA's powerful workflow capabilities allow you to map an issue's lifecycle to your business processes.
Get started with out-of-the-box workflow
JIRA provides a default workflow - a generic set of steps that gets you up and running in no time.
Customise to your business processes
It's easy to configure JIRA's workflow to reflect your organisation's unique needs. JIRA's flexible workflow architecture lets you define individual workflows for departments, projects and even issue types. Each workflow can have as many (or as few) steps as required.
Granular process control
JIRA's versatile workflow lets you easily control the circumstances under which an issue moves from one step to the next.
Usage example: Your organisation's security policy may stipulate that only the assignee or users belonging to a particular group can move an issue from 'Open' to 'Start Progress'. You might also want to check to make sure the issue is categorised appropriately. Additionally the project manager may require an automatic email notification that the issue has moved to 'Start Progress'.
To achieve this, JIRA provides:
- Conditions: these determine if an issue can commence the transition from one step to the next (e.g. is the user a member of the authorised group?)
- Validators: once Conditions are met, Validators check to ensure that any required fields (e.g. appropriate categorisation) are entered during the transition
- Post Functions: these are automated events (e.g. email the project manager) triggered immediately after validation
Comments
Sometimes an issue may require further discussion before it can progress. Logging a comment on an issue allows straightforward discussion with co-workers. JIRA records each comment along with:
- the name of the comment author
- a time and date stamp
- a hyperlink to the comment
